Vikings Head to Michigan for the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – After qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Kaly Banks, Patty Jo English, Ryan Hartman, Megan Means, Mearah Miedema, Austin Miller, Rebekah Rairdon, Nicolette Schmidt, Cami Streff and Tyl Woelber are heading to Allendale, Michigan, this weekend to represent Augustana at the national championships.

The Event

The championships will be held Thursday through Saturday in Allendale, Michigan, at the GVSU Track & Field Stadium. Grand Valley State and West Michigan Sports Commission will serve as co-hosts of the championships.

The majority of the first day of competition will be preliminary rounds with a chance to advance to the finals later into the weekend.

Kicking Thursday off for Augustana will be the metric mile preliminaries. Miller will take to the track at 4:10 p.m. with English and Schmidt following shortly after in the women's 1,500m, slated for 4:25 p.m.

The 1,500m finals will take place on Saturday, the men's race is at 1:25 p.m. with the women's race following at 1:35 p.m.

Later in the day, Hartman and Rairdon will take to the track in the 3,000m steeplechase preliminaries. The gun goes off for Hartman at 5:40 p.m. Rairdon will be at the starting line at 6:10 p.m.

The 3,000m steeplechase finals will take place on Friday, with the men's race starting at 6:15 p.m. and the women's race following at 6:30 p.m.

Means will be the first Viking competing in a final, racing the 10,000m under the lights at 7:50 p.m. Thursday.

Two more finals will be on the horizon for Augustana on Friday. Woelber will start the day for the Vikings in the high jump finals at 2:30 p.m. 

Banks will be competing in the triple jump shortly after, taking to the runway track at 3:45 p.m. 

Streff will serve as the nightcap for Augustana taking to the track for the 800m preliminaries at 5:15 p.m.

The 800m finals will take place at 2:55 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday, Woelber will start the day for Augustana with the javelin throw starting at 9:30 a.m.

In the afternoon, Miedema will take to the high jump pit at 1:05 p.m.

Two Vikings will take to the track in the 5,000m, Hartman runs at 4 p.m. with English following at 4:25 p.m. on Saturday.

The Athletes

Kaly Banks - Triple Jump

With a massive personal best in the triple jump, going from one meet (39-6.5) to the next meet (40-10.5). Banks, a native of Cannon Falls, Minnesota, is Augustana's school record holder in the triple jump. Her personal best of 40-10.5 ranks her 15th in the nation. This marks the senior's first time making it to the NCAA outdoor championships.

Patty Jo English - 1,500m, 5,000m

The Elko, Minnesota, native will make her second appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. English will be competing in the 5,000m with her time of 16:35.87, which ranks her 23rd in the nation. She will also compete in the 1,500m with her qualifying time of 4:27.98, ranking 29th in the nation.

Ryan Hartman - 3,000m Steeplechase, 5,000m

Hartman, hailing from Wausau, Wisconsin, has left his mark in Augustana's history book, recording two top-2 times this season. In just his fourth 3,000m steeplechase of his career, he ran a blistering time of 8:44.07, just three seconds shy of the school record. Additionally, Hartman is the second-ever Viking to break 14:00 in the 5,000m, running 13:59.04. He enters the national championship meet ranked fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase and 18th in the 5,000m.

Megan Means - 10,000m

Means, hailing from Norfolk, Nebraska, ran the No. 4 time in school history in the 10,000m at the Mt. Sac Relays, qualifying her for the national meet. Her time of 34:55.50 was a near 30-second personal best and ranks her 14th in the nation.

Mearah Miedema - High Jump

Miedema, local to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, cleared 5-9.25 at the Minnesota State Open to punch her ticket to the national championship. Her mark ranks her in a tie for sixth in the nation. This is Miedema's second-straight year making the triple to Allendale, Michigan, competing in the high jump at the national meet. 

Austin Miller - 1,500m

Miller, a local of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, ran the 10th-fastest time in Division II history over 1,500m earlier this. His personal best time of 3:40.59 ran at the Byran Clay Invitational lowered the school record by nearly five seconds. Miller holds the second-fastest time among the field entered in the 1,500m.

Rebekah Rairdon - 3,000m Steeplechase

Rairdon, coming from Fort Collins, Colo, ran a near personal best time of 10:36.61 in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational to be among the nations-best, with her time being 17th best in the nation. This is the second-straight season Rairdon will be competing in the 3,000m steeplechase on the big stage. 

Nicolette Schmidt - 1,500m

Schmidt, a Redfield, South Dakota, native, ran the No. 4 time in school history over 1,500m running 4:27.17 at the historic Drake Relays. She shaved almost three seconds off last year's personal best to be ranked 25th in the nation.

Cami Streff - 800m

Streff, a native of Madison, South Dakota, ran the No. 2 time in school history in the 800m at the Bryan Clay Invitational, running 2:09.04. Her time ranks her 20th in the nation and marks her first time competing at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.

Tyl Woelber - High Jump, Javelin

For the second-straight year, Woelber will be headed to Allendale, Michigan, to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. This year, he has qualified in both the high jump and javelin. In the regular season, Woelber broke the school record in both events, being the first Viking to clear seven feet in the high jump with his leap of 7-0.25. He also broke his school record in the javelin throw, with a heave of 209-4, increasing his school record by three feet.
