ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Augustana track & field team saved their best efforts for last with two All-America honors and two school records on the final day of the Outdoor Championships.
"The coaching staff is very proud of our team's performances at the NCAA Championships," director of track & field/cross country Tracy Hellman said. "Just getting to the NCAA Championships is an accomplishment in itself but to come home with some All-America awards is a great result!
"We are sad to see the season come to a close but we are happy that we finished with our best effort and performance."
Austin Miller, the national runner-up in the mile at the indoor championships, earned runner-up honors in the 1,500m on Saturday in Allendale, Michigan.
The Sioux Falls, South Dakota, native ran his race, holding the 12th position through the first 1,100m meters. Miller would begin to cover ground at the bell lap before challenging the leaders down the final homestretch. Similar to the preliminary round, Miller's final 400m was the fastest in the field, running 53.74. His last lap was over half a second faster than the winner's. However, Callum Elson of American International would claim victory in 3:46.35, with Miller running 3:46.62.
Following the men's 1,500m was Patty Jo English in the women's 1,500m.
For the second time in the NCAA Championships, Patty Jo English would run a personal-best in the metric mile. Her school record time of 4:25.25 ran on Thursday, would not last until the end of the day.
After the first 300m, English was a second behind the leaders, sitting in 12th. Following a 1:10.50 quarter mile, the Viking was in the ninth position. Despite running a faster lap in the next circuit, English moved back to 10th. She moved up two spots over the final 400m to claim eighth-place and earn All-America honors lowering her school record by almost a second, running 4:24.39.
In the men's javelin earlier in the day, Tyl Woelber broke his school record. The Pipestone, Minnesota, native recorded a new personal-best throw of 211-0 on his second attempt to get into the finals. His school record mark was the best of his six attempts and earned him second-team All-America honors, placing ninth.
At the high jump pit, Mearah Miedema tied for 17th, clearing the opening height of 5-3.75 before bowing out at 5-5.75.
Ryan Hartman returned to the track for his third event of the NCAA championships, fresh off an All-America performance in Friday night's 3,000m steeplechase.
The Wausau, Wisconsin, native hung with the quick pace, running 4:40 mile pace through 2,600m. Despite falling off that pace the next lap, Hartman advanced two places to move into 20th. From 3,800m to 4,600m, he moved up three spots, the Viking closed in 1:06.05 to run 14:31.14, placing 17th.
A little over two hours after English earned All-America honors in the 1,500m, she took to the track again for the women's 5,000m final.
After 600m, the pace began to pick up as English averaged around 5:20 pace for the next 2,000m to hold the 17th position in the race. She moved up to as high as 11th place through 3,400m and closed in 1:14.01 to run 16:49.88 and finish 15th overall.
