Viking Baseball Heads South for Wayne State Doubleheader

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--The Augustana baseball team travels to Wayne, Nebraska, Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader against the Wayne State Wildcats. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.

Scouting the Wildcats
Wayne State holds an overall record of 20-19 and an NSIC record of 14-11. The Wildcats were last in action against Concordia-St. Paul, defeating the Golden Bears 2-1 in the three-game series. Quinn McCafferty, Carter Thomas and Colin Lynam lead the Wildcats in several categories. MCafferty has made the start in all 39 games for WSC this season, holding a batting average of .368. He has logged 49 hits and 12 doubles to lead the team. Thomas is hitting .359 with 47 hits and 40 runs. Lynam rounds out the trio with a batting average of .338 and 47 hits. On the bump, Corbin Kirk has an ERA of 6.38 and has made 10 starts. Kirk leads the team with 63 strikeouts. Braden Cannon has appeared in 15 games and has made one start, holding a record of 2-0. 

The Vikings
Augustana is 32-16 overall in 2023 with an NSIC record of 21-7. The Vikings were last in action against Upper Iowa, seeing a 2-1 series win. Augustana has successfully stolen 116 bases this season. Leading the charge is Nick Banowetz, who is 24-of-27 on stolen base attempts. Trevor Winterstein follows closely at 23-of-26 and Jack Hines is 17-of-18. At the plate, Hines, Banowetz, Winterstein, and Drey Dirksen have been impressive for the Vikings this season. Hines leads the lineup with a batting average of .369 and has totaled 59 hits, 10 doubles, four triples and 29 RBI. Dirksen tops the team with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 40 RBI. Following with 11 doubles and two triples is Banowetz, who is hitting .340. Winterstein has a .303 batting average, 57 hits, five doubles, two triples, five home runs and 30 RBI. Seth Miller, a two-time NSIC pitcher of the week in 2023, has amassed 67 strikeouts and has a record of 7-1. Caleb Saari also has recorded 62 strikeouts and has a 2.91 ERA, holding a record of 3-2 overall. Caleb Kranz has struck out 68 batters in 2023, has a 4-1 record and has spent 45.2 innings on the mound. Adam Diedrich leads the nation and Viking pitching staff with 10 saves this season.
