CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Augustana wrestling collected two ranked victories—including a defeat of the No. 2 team in the country—and fell once on Friday in the first day of action at the NWCA/USMC Multi-Division National Duals. The Vikings are now 4-4 on the season, with three victories coming against ranked opponents.
No. 7 Augustana 20, No. 12 Grand Valley State 17
Kicking things off at 125 pounds,
Jaxson Rohman collected three takedowns and an escape through the first two periods of action, taking control with the 10-2 lead over Orion Wilson. Despite giving up four escapes through the match, Rohman added in three takedowns in the third period alone to collect the 19-4 tech fall.
Connor Whiteley scored next for the Vikings at 141, starting strong with a takedown in the first period. He added in an escape and a takedown in the second before sealing the win with another takedown and a point for riding time in the third, taking the 11-0 major decision.
Connor Simmonds followed suit at 157 pounds, starting his bout off with a takedown in the first. The foot was then firmly put on the gas as Simmonds rattled off an escape, takedown, two four-point nearfalls in the second period with an extra point for riding time to claim the convincing 16-0 tech fall.
The momentum kept going at 165 with
Payton Handevidt, who after a scoreless first period, added an escape and a takedown for the 4-1 lead. After giving up to escapes and a penalty point, another takedown would seal the 7-4 decision.
In the final win of the dual,
Max Ramberg took a takedown and an escape into the third period, ahead 4-0. He fended off a charge from #15 Wyatt Miller, added another takedown, gained a point for riding time and claimed the 8-2 decision.
No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney 23, No. 7 Augustana 13
Cael Larson claimed the first match victory of the dual for the Vikings, collecting a late takedown in the first period for a 3-0 advantage. He took control in the second, tallying two more takedowns. The win was sealed with a reversal midway through the final two minutes, making it a 12-2 major decision at 149 pounds.
Simmonds earned his second victory of the day at 157 in stunning style, taking an 8-0 lead into the third period after tallying two takedowns, an escape and a penalty point through the first five minutes of action. Despite a takedown in the third period, Simmonds would collect an extra point for ride time to take the 9-3 decision.
After a scoreless first period,
Coy Gunderson tallied an escape to take the 1-0 lead into the third. The match soon tied up at 1 apiece, but Gunderson added in a takedown and, despite another escape, took the 4-2 decision over #9 Kaden Hart.
Ramberg found himself behind 1-0 mid-way through the second period and added in an escape of his own in the third period, forcing overtime. It was a locked-tight physical battle, but Ramberg emerged victorious with the takedown for the 4-1 sudden victory over #3 Jackson Kinsella.
No. 7 Augustana 21, No. 2 Glenville State 18
An early takedown gave Rohman the 3-1 advantage heading into the second period, but soon became a close contest at 3-2 following an escape. A quick escape in the third made it a 4-2 advantage for the decision over #13 Colton Drousias.
At 149,
Davin Rose earned the forfeit to give the Vikings six points and take the 9-7 advantage as a team.
Kyle Boeke immediately added to that, pinning Wiley Houser in a dominating 26 seconds for another six points on the scoreboard.
After tying up 1-1 with an exchange of escapes, Handevidt headed into overtime with Loranzo Rajaonarivelo, and with two second remaining in the extra period, logged a takedown for the 4-1 sudden victory.
Ramberg continued his Friday hot streak in his third match of the day, but first found himself behind 3-0 after a takedown in the first period. The second period remained scoreless but Ramberg went off in the third, tallying an escape, takedown and a four-point nearfall to claim the 8-3 decision over #7 Nicholas Johnson.
