ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Augustana wrestling's
TJ North came up just short in a bid to secure an NCAA National Championship for a second straight year, losing 3-2 in the 125-pound finals to St. Cloud State's Tim Prescott.
The Vikings ended their tournament run with two wrestlers earning All-American status, North and senior
Jayd Docken – each recording their second selection. Docken took sixth place after making it to the semifinals before being knocked off by Newberry's Huston Evans in a 3-2 decision earlier on Friday morning.
Michael Lowman, Augustana's third and final wrestler competing, picked up one win in the two-day event.
Overall as a team, the Vikings tied with Kutztown University placing 14th with 25.5 points, while the Huskies took home the national title with 84.5 total points.
The loss wraps up an otherwise great year for the junior, who finished with a 26-4 record. North had previously beaten Prescott (21-8) twice in the last month, with the most recent time coming at the Super Region 3 back on March 1.
Both wrestlers battled to a 0-0 stalemate through the first period, with neither being able to dictate the action.
At the start of the second period, North was able to break the scoreless tie with a quick escape to take a 1-0 lead. Despite some attacks by Prescott, the quick-handed North was able to keep control of the match and hold the one-point lead going into the final period.
Neither wrestler was able to take advantage to start the third period. With about 45 seconds remaining in the match, Prescott got the break his was searching for with a takedown of North. The former Elk Point High star was able to scramble out fast though to get the escape and make it 3-2.
But Prescott was able to hold off North's final attacks to pick up the decision and take home the national championship.
Augustana will return to the mat in the fall of 2015.
