MANKATO, Minn. – The Augustana track and field team put together a banner day at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday. The Vikings notched four provisional marks, 32 individual top-eight finishes and numerous personal records.
"Today was a great day for the team across multiple areas," assistant coach
Scott Tanis said of his team's performance on Saturday. "This is a meet we put emphasis on and it's encouraging to see the team follow through with such strong performances."
Olivia Montez Brown,
Josh Barrows,
Glen Ellingson and the women's 4x400-meter relay team set provisional marks.
Montez Brown set a personal record and notched a provisional mark in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63. Montez Brown finished second in the finals with a time of 8.66.
Irene Almarcha (third),
Valerie Moos (fifth) and
Ellie Rew (sixth) also finished in the top-eight of the 60-meter hurdles.
Barrows continued his strong season with a first-place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 1:53.25. Barrows just missed his personal best time but hit a provisional mark.
Ellingson hit the provisional mark and placed in first in the 3,000-meters with a personal best time of 8:25.90.
Nick Larsen took seventh in the event with a time of 8:48.60.
Ellingson also took first in the mile, paving the way for six Vikings place in the top-eight in the event.
Nathan Schroeder, Larsen,
Nate Souther,
Skylar DeJong and
Sean Heaton placed in the top-eight and all but Souther hit personal best marks.
The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of
Valerie Moos,
Irene Almarcha,
Carina Hofmeister and
Cortney Dowling raced to a season-best time of 3:52.79 and hit a provisional mark. The team's time was good for the 10th best time in Division II and the second best mark in the NSIC.
In sprints,
Paul Meloche took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.30, which is also good for the best time on the team this season.
In the 400-meters, Dowling won the event with a time of 57.85, just narrowly missing her personal best time.
In distance events,
Annie Kruse and
Mackenzie Kelly finished one-two in the mile with both setting a personal best time.
Cassidy Soli finished fifth with a time of 5:23.18. Kelly and Kruse also raced to top-five finishes in the 3,000-meters with Kelly taking second and Kruse placing in fifth.
In the 1,000-meters
Alex Tietz and
Austin Krohnke finished fifth and sixth, respectively, and Tietz raced to a personal best time of 2:36.65.
In field events,
Anthony Huber took first in the shot put with a personal best toss of 50-04.5 and finished in sixth in the weight throw.
In the high jump,
Christine Campbell finished in fourth with a personal best mark of 5-05.
Tanner Schulte finished third on the men's side with a personal record leap of 6-06.25.
In other jumping events,
Coley Stoller finished in third in the third triple jump with a season-best jump of 37-01.75. In the long jump,
Sara Heyn finished eighth with a leap of 16-08.75.
Next weekend will be a busy weekend for the Vikings as they will be at the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D. on Feb. 10-11 and will also be at the NSIC Multi-Events in Mankato, Minn. on Feb. 12-13.
