ST. PAUL, Minn. – Josh Barrows got the Augustana University track and field team off to a roaring start on day one of the NSIC Outdoor Championships in St. Paul, Minn. Barrows broke the NSIC record in the 400-meters hurdles during the preliminaries on Friday.
Barrows eclipsed the NSIC record with a time of 52.58, taking first in the preliminary heat. Barrows topped Jake Hamik's (Northern State) seven year record of 52.60 that he set in 2010. Barrows' time was a personal best and a provisionally qualifying mark and ranks 21st in Division II.
After day one the Vikings had three student-athletes capture All-NSIC honors, highlighted by
Kelsey Kaufmann's top finish in the high jump. Kaufmann had a jump of 5-08.5 to win the NSIC high jump crown.
Glen Ellingson finished in third in the 10,000-meters with a time of 31:47.03 to earn All-NSIC honors.
Aaron Runge also earned team points for Augustana with a sixth place finish in the race with a personal best time of 32:26.37.
Olivia Montez Brown, having already won the NSIC heptathlon two weeks ago, picked up All-NSIC honors in the long jump with a mark of 19-02, taking third in the event. Montez Brown just missed out on All-NSIC honors in the high jump by placing fourth with a personal best mark of 5-05.25. Montez Brown also advanced to the 100-meter hurdle finals tomorrow with a personal best time and a provisional mark of 14.13.
Other Vikings earning team points on Friday included
Mackenzie Kelly and
Izzy Van Veldhuizen. Kelly finished in fourth in the 10,000-meters with a personal record time of 37:42.80. Van Veldhuizen took seventh in the shot put with a personal best toss of 43-03.25.
Including Barrows, Augustana had 12 student-athletes clinch spots in the finals on Saturday with their performances during the preliminaries on Friday.
In the 1,500-meters,
Emma Anderson finished in second with a time of 4:45.06 and
Cassidy Soli set a personal high with a time of 4:45.89 and finished in sixth. In the men's race,
John Klecker took fourth and
Alex Tietz finished in 11th to advance to Saturday's finals.
In other track events,
Austin Krohnke took third in the 800-meter preliminaries with a time of 1:55.21. In the women's 400-meters,
Cortney Dowling moved on with an eighth place finish with a personal record time of 57.83.
In hurdles,
Valerie Moos took third in the 400-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 1:02.65. In the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries,
Paul Meloche took seventh with a personal best time of 15.02 and
Dylon Van't Hof finished in eighth. Advancing to the 100-meter finals alongside Montez Brown will be
Irene Almarcha, who finished in sixth with a time of 14.32.
After day one, the Vikings women sit in third place with 38 points. The women trail Winona State (53 points) and Minnesota State (48). The Viking men sit in 10th with nine points, with Minnesota State leading with 88 points.
The Vikings will wrap up the NSIC Outdoor Championships on Saturday in St. Paul, Minn. at Sea Foam Stadium. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with running events starting at 1 p.m.
