ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Augustana track and field team produced fireworks on the final day of the NSIC Outdoor Championships in St. Paul, Minn. The Vikings saw nine personal records achieved, seven All-NSIC recipients, six provisional qualifying marks, two student-athletes winning events and one school record fall to go along with a slew of point scorers on Saturday.
"It's always the goal to finish the season with your strongest team performance and I believe we did that this weekend at the NSIC Championships," coach
Tracy Hellman said of his team's performance. "We had a lot of people step up and put forth strong performances.
Valerie Moos punched her ticket to Nationals in the 400-meter hurdles and the women's 4x400 relay team also put themselves in a position to qualify. Add in titles from
Josh Barrows and
Nathan Schroeder, along with season best efforts from numerous others, and it was an encouraging weekend overall."
Valerie Moos went out and broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second in the event. Moos raced to a time of 59.27, breaking
Kayla Mescher's previous record of 59.86 set in 2016. Moos' time also ranks seventh in Division II.
Josh Barrows, coming off of his NSIC record performance in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, went on to take first in the finals on Saturday. Barrows finished with a time of 52.76 just missing his record mark.
Nathan Schroeder earned a first place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a dominating performance. Schroeder finished with a personal best and provisionally qualifying time of 9:15.48.
Skylar DeJong and
Sean Heaton also earned team points for the Vikings, finishing in second and sixth, respectively, with both setting personal bests. In the women's race,
Rebekah Rairdon (6th),
Courtney Hottovy (7th) and
Rachel Rairdon (8th) recorded point scoring finishes, with both Rairdon sisters set PRs and Hottovy recording a season's best.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team put together a solid performance to earn All-NSIC honors on Saturday. The team of Moos,
Irene Almarcha,
Carina Hofmeister and
Cortney Dowling finished in second with a season's best and a provisionally qualifying time of 3:45.31, which is 21st in Division II.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles,
Paul Meloche earned All-NSIC honors with a third place finish and a personal record time of 14.97.
Dylon Van't Hof also earned team points with a time of 15.35 and finished in sixth. In the women's 110-meter hurdles,
Olivia Montez Brown and Almarcha finished in fifth and sixth, respectively, with each recording provisionally qualifying marks.
Emma Anderson earned All-NSIC honors in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:34.54 and finishing in third.
Cassidy Soli set a personal record time of 4:41.33 and finished in sixth. In the men's race,
John Klecker earned team points with a seventh place finish and a time of 4:02.14.
In the women's 5,000-meters,
Mackenzie Kelly finished in fourth with a time of 17:45.07. In the men's race, the Vikings had three point scorers in
Glen Ellingson (4th),
Aaron Runge (5th) and
Logan Burns (8th).
In mid-distance events,
Austin Krohnke recorded a season's best time of 1:54.59 in a sixth place finish in the 800-meters. Dowling finished in eighth in the 400-meters with a personal best time of 57.69.
Coley Stoller earned team points in the triple jump with a leap of 37-01.75, good for seventh place.
In relays, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of
Alaina Klapperich, Hofmeister, Almarcha and Dowling finished in sixth with a season's best time of 47.71. In the men's 4x400-meter relay, the team of
Chris Sharpe,
Trey Heid,
Blake Savey and Barrows finished in third with a time of 3:18.25.
Both the men's and the women's team finish in fourth in the team races. The men garnered 69 points, with Minnesota State taking the men's crown with 247 points. The women posted 87 points, with Winona State winning the women's title with 134 points.
In all, Augustana had 11 All-NSIC recipients, three individual champions (Kaufmann, Barrows and Schroeder), one broken NSIC record (Barrows, 400-meter hurdles) and one school record broken (Moos, 400-meter hurdles) during the two-day NSIC Outdoor Championships.
Next up for the Vikings will be the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Bradenton, Fla. on May 25-27.
