Hofmeister Breaks School Record on Day One of the Howard Wood Relays

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana track and field senior Carina Hofmeister showed on Friday that she is in prime position for the postseason with a record breaking performance at the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Hofmeister set the track on fire, taking first in the 200-meters with a blazing time of 24.51, breaking her own school record of 24.76 she set in 2014 as a freshman. Hofmeister was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished in second with a season's best time of 47.92. Hofmeister was accompanied by Sara Heyn, Irene Almarcha and Cortney Dowling.

Dowling also finished in the top-seven in two other events. Dowling took sixth in the 400-meters with a personal record time of 57.99 and finished in seventh in the 200-meters.

Josh Barrows showed he was also ready for the postseason with a personal best time of 1:51.18 in the 800-meters taking third in the event. Barrows time was a provisional qualifying mark and his time ranks 18th in Division II. In the women's 800-meters, Cassidy Soli finished in ninth with a personal best time of 2:17.22.

Glen Ellingson put together a strong effort en route to a first place finish in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:56.07. Nate Souther finished in fifth with a time of 15:41.11.

Peter Schukking also took home a top finish on Friday. Schukking finished first in the javelin with a personal best throw of 166-01. Alec Blonquist also set a personal best with a mark of 154-09, finishing third.

In other field events, Kelsey Kaufmann finished in second in the high jump with a jump of 5-08.75 and Christine Campbell set a personal best with a mark of 5-05 and finished in fourth. Izzy Van Veldhuizen took fourth in the shot put with a personal record toss of 41-00.25.

Coley Stoller had an eventful day by placing in the top seven in two field events. Stoller took fifth in the triple jump and set a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 99-02, finishing in seventh.

In the men's 200-meters, Paul Meloche took second with a time of 22.49 and Trey Heid finished in sixth with a personal high with a time of 22.77.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Nathan Schroeder had quite a debut with a second place finish with a time of 9:30.21. Skylar DeJong and Sean Heaton finished in fifth and seventh in the event, respectively. In the women's race, the Rairdon sisters earned personal best times. Rebekah Rairdon finished in third and Rachel Rairdon took sixth, with Courtney Hottovy finishing in-between them with a fifth place finish.

The Vikings return to day two of the Howard Wood Relays at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday. Track and field events are set to begin at 9 a.m.
