BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Augustana track and field started day one of the NCAA Indoor Championships on the right foot at the Crossplex Complex in Birmingham, Alabama. Sophomore Elizabeth Schaefer finished eighth in the pentathlon scoring 3,682 points to earn All-America honors Thursday.
Starting the day of five events for Schaefer was the 60m hurdles where she placed eighth running 8.91 good for 929 points. In the second event, the high jump, she placed sixth with a jump of 5-4.5 gaining 783 points.
In the third-of-five events, Schaefer claimed a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 34-1.25 giving her 555 points. In the fourth event of the day, the long jump, the Rapid City, South Dakota, native jumped to a ninth-place finish in 17-2.75 for 628 points.
In the final event of the pentathlon, the 800m, Schaefer ran a new personal best of 2:25.43 to give her 751 points enroute to the All-America accolade.
Also competing on Thursday was junior Tyl Woelber in the heptathlon. Four of the seven events were completed on the meet's opening day with the remaining events going Friday.
In the first event of the day, Woelber placed sixth in the 60m dash running a time of 7.28 to give him 785 points. The next event for the Pipestone, Minnesota, native was the long jump where he placed fourth with a leap of 22-6.25 for 781 points.
In the third event for the heptathlon was the shot put where Woelber placed fifth with a heave of 39-4.25 granting 606 points. The final event of the day was the high jump, where he took the top spot clearing a height of 6-8 for 831 points.
Woelber completes day one in second place with 3,003 points.
The remainder of the Viking squad will compete Thursday starting with the remainder of the heptathlon at 10 a.m.
