HILO, Hawaii–Augustana baseball wrapped up the five-game series with a win against Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday. The Vikings move to 1-4 on the season and the Vulcans record becomes 4-1.Â
The Vikings started the scoring in the first inning, earning a 1-0 lead. Jack Hines sent Trevor Winterstein home with a single up the middle. The lead would be short-lived as the Vulcans tied it up 1-1 in the bottom of the inning.Â
Augustana tallied two runs in the fourth inning to gain a 3-1 advantage over UHH. Max Mosser and Drey Dirksen scored on Tate Meiner's double to right center to put the Vikings ahead.
In the fifth inning, Winterstein came in to score for the second time when Mosser's hit sent him home. AU pushed the lead to 5-1 when Hines scored on a balk shortly after.
The Vulcans cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
It was the Vikings' game in the end when Meiners tallied a run in the sixth. A solo home run from Drey Dirksen in the eighth frame finalized the 7-3 victory for Augustana.
Meiners went 3-for-4 while Winterstein went 3-for-5 in the contest, leading the lineup with three hits each. Winterstein and Dirksen led the Vikings with two runs a piece and Meiners totaled two RBI.
Caleb Kranz got the start on the mound for the Vikings, striking out seven batters across 4.1 innings. Tom Sun earned the win after taking over for Kranz and tossing 2.1 innings, striking out one batter. Jason Fink struck out a batter and spent one inning on the mound before Adam Diedrich finished the game for AU, striking out two batters and throwing 1.1 innings.
