Viking Baseball Wears Out Bases in Road Rout

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Augustana baseball team reached base 26 times on their way to a 20-5 win in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at Griffon Baseball Field.

Jack Hines went 3 for 4 with a double, home run, four RBI, and three runs scored in the victory. Drey Dirksen added a pair of hits with three runs scored and three RBI while drilling his third home run of the season.

Trevor Winterstein went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored, and Nick Banowetz hit a home run and drove in five runs. Also leaving the yard was Tate Meiners, who drove in two runs and scored each time he reached base. The Vikings had 15 hits from 11 different hitters and eight of nine starters. AU also drew six walks and were hit five times, with all nine starters and 14 different hitters reaching base.

Kai Taylor struck out three in two innings while serving as the starter. Tom Sun earned the victory, throwing 1 ⅓ in scoreless relief while striking out three. As a whole, the pitching staff collected 10 K's in seven innings of action.

The Vikings (3-2) struck in the first inning, using a pair of hit batsmen, two walks, reaching on an error, and a Hines double to score three runs.

After the Griffons (9-5) scored two in the bottom of the inning, Dirksen delivered a two-out solo shot to center to take a 4-2 lead.

The offense exploded in the third inning to put the game out of reach. Joe Kolbeck and Luke Ballweg earned a walk and hit by pitch, respectively, and both advanced into scoring position with a wild pitch.

Ragan Pinnow delivered a single on the next pitch to drive home Kolbeck, and Tate Meiners drew a walk on a passed ball that allowed Ballweg to score.

Max Mosser would get drilled by a pitch and Wintersein singled to keep the merry-go-round rolling. Banowetz reached on an errant throw home to score Meiners, and Dirksen scored a pair on a single to left. The exclamation point came from Hines, who lashed a three-run home run to right center to take a 12-2 lead.

Meiners hit his first home run of the season with one out in the fourth inning and Banowetz drove in the 14th run of the game on a sac fly later in the inning.

With a pair of runners on, Banowetz concluded the Viking scoring, blasting one to center for his second career home run.

The Vikings continue non-conference road action on Saturday, taking on Drury for a doubleheader in Springfield, Mo. First pitch expected for noon.
