Josh Barrows and senior
Carina Hofmeister didn't take long to leave their mark on the 2016-17 indoor season. Barrows broke the school record in the 600 meters and Hofmeister broke the record in the 200 meters at the SDSU Preseason Open in Brookings, S.D. on Friday.
Barrows took first in the 600 meters with a time of 1:19.72. Barrows topped Aduo Omot's record he had set in 2012 by almost a full second. Omot's time was 1:20.61.
Hofmeister broke her own school record she had set last season. Hofmeister finished fourth and ran to a time of 25.14 which was a tenth faster than her previous record. Hofmeister also set a PR in the 60 meter prelims with a time of 7.83 and went on to finish fourth in the finals.
Olivia Montez Brown picked up where she left off last season. The All-American took first in the pentathlon with 3641 points. With Montez Brown's mark she hit the NCAA provisional mark for the pentathlon.
"It was a solid opening meet for our track team. We had some great performances and it was good to see our track team compete for the first time this year," coach
Tracy Hellman speaking of his team's performance on Friday. "The highlight of the meet was our two school records and Olivia (Montez Brown) hitting the NCAA Provisional mark in multi-event. I'm excited to see how our season goes from here."
Two freshman made a splash in their Augustana debuts.
Morgan Rothschadl raced to a first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.20.
Cortney Dowling finished second in the 400 meters finishing with a time of 57.77.
In other track events,
Dylon Van't Hof led a trio of Vikings in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles. Van't Hof took third with a time of 8.44 and
Paul Meloche and
Evan Ward took fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the women's 60 meter hurdles
Irene Almarcha finished in fifth with a time of 8.90.
Ellie Rew raced to an eighth place finish with a time of 9.37.
In field events,
Coley Stoller took second in the triple jump with a mark of 10.94 meters. In the long jump
Sara Heyn finished fourth and tied a personal best with a jump of 5.18 meters. In the high jump
Christine Campbell took fifth with a leap of 1.60 meters.
Anthony Huber finished ninth in the weight throw and set a personal best with a mark of 15.92 meters.
Glen Ellingson competed at the GVSU Holiday Open and notched a PR and a NCAA Provisional mark in the 5000 meters. Ellingson finished with a time of 14:35.0.
Jesus Urtusuastegui ran at the Chuck Peterson Open in Mankato, Minn. Urtusuastegui raced in the 5000 meters and finished first and set a PR with a time of 15:04.44.
The Vikings will be off until 2017 when they will compete the Mankato Alumni Open in Mankato, Minn. on Jan. 7.
