If you wanted to get to the basket from 1987-1991 against the Augustana Viking basketball team you probably had to contend with 6-foot-9 Brett Szabo. Equipped with a massive wingspan, Szabo was a dominating force as he patrolled the lane for four years.
Szabo came to Augustana as a skinny freshman from Postville, IA and quickly blossomed into one of the finest big men in the NCC. He was selected to the All-Conference Team in 1989 and 1990. He holds the school record for blocked shots in a career (185), is eighth in scoring (1,520 points), and sixth in rebounds (802).
Brett played a major role as the Vikings won the North Central Conference championship in 1989. His most memorable game occurred during that season when the Vikings defeated Northern Colorado at home to win the conference title. Individually, Brett remembered a game his freshman year at the NCAA Division II Regional Playoffs when he scored 36 points against St. Cloud State. He was later named to the All-Tournament Team.
History Professor Endre Gastony was one of Brett's favorites as a student. Brett wrote, "He was always friendly, interested in how the basketball team was doing, and eager to discuss our Hungarian heritage."
