With Rich Chapman in the backcourt, Augustana twice qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II basketball playoffs.
In his freshman season the Vikings finished second in the North Central Conference with a 10-4 record. As a sophomore he was named to the all-conference team and the league's all-academic squad as the Vikings again finished second in the standings.
Augustana slipped to a 3-11 conference mark in Chapman's junior season, but he retained places on the all-conference and all-academic teams. In his final season Chapman helped the Vikings to a runner-up finish in the league standings; for the third straight year, he was all-conference and all-academic choice. In addition, he was named to the North Central Regional all-tournament team, the Argus Leader's all-South Dakota College Team and was picked to play for the West in the Pizza Hut Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
Off the court Chapman was elected to the Augustana Men's Senate his junior and senior years, named the 1977 college male Honor Athlete by the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce's Sports and Recreation Committee, was a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group leader and belonged to the Economics and Business Club.
