Hall of Fame
Although he graduated from Augustana in 1979, many of Vance Butler's accomplishments remain as standards for aspiring athletes.
His times for the 400- and 100-meter hurdles were school records. He qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II national track meet all four years he competed for Augustana.
As a senior, Butler set the current North Central Conference record of 51.83 seconds for the 400 hurdles. That same season he was entered in the prestigious Drake Relays and finished fifth in the 400 hurdles; he was the only Division II athlete to place. In the North Central Conference outdoor championships he anchored Augustana's 1,600-meter relay team to first place (3:18.86).
For three seasons Butler served as a co-captain of Augustana track teams. After four years of competition, Butler's name was attached to school records in nine different events, indoors and outdoors.
An outstanding student, Butler received a post graduate scholarship from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1981 he completed work on a master's degree in elementary education at Augustana.
