The last year an Augustana football team won a conference championship was 1959. Perhaps no other team has come closer than the 1975 team.

Led by standout defensive lineman, Doug Clark, the Vikings finished the North Central Conference schedule with a 5-2 record. The Vikings' two losses were to undefeated champion North Dakota (36-34) and runner-up Northern Iowa (20-14). Included were wins over South Dakota State and the University of South Dakota, and a 27-14 conquest of North Dakota State on Viking Days.

Doug Clark anchored a formidable defensive line for the Vikings. He was voted tricaptain by his teammates. He also earned most valuable freshman player, most valuable defensive lineman his junior year, and most valuable defensive player his senior year. Doug started 38 of the 40 varsity games he played during his career at Augustana and was included on the All-NCC honorable mention list.
