Hall of Fame
Gunderson, a native of Menno, was a four regular at fullback for the Vikings and a teammate of Hall of Famers Walt Hokenstad and the late Leif Fjellestad. He was the complete ball player and was known as a booming punter (once kicking the old pumpkin ball for 70 yards), an excellent passer, a kick-off return man, defensive ace and placement kicker.
He was twice selected to the all-conference team. During the track season Gunderson bore the brunt of Augustana's efforts in the weight events. While at the Viking school he competed in football, basketball, baseball and track.
